The Women

Shaunel Watts Brown

Shaunel has always loved to sing. At age 5, she gave up the idea of becoming a professional singer, when she decided she didn’t want to dye her hair pink. Somehow she was lured back into the professional musician scene her sophomore year of college, when she changed her major from Elementary Education, to Elementary Music Education. Mark Brown won her heart with his athletic and musical skills and they were married in 2007 moving to Arlington, VA in 2009. She sang her way through teaching regular 1st grade in the district, and stayed home after her son was born in 2010. She currently teaches music to pre-K students at Randolph Elementary in South Arlington (and is still in shock that such a position exists). She is expecting another human to enter the mix sometime in August.

Skye Rosdahl
I create art because there is hardly anything on this earth that rejuvenates me the way that art does. It centers me to a place where nothing can touch me. I can be completely consumed with it and never want to come out of the world that has been created between the art piece and me.   I know that I will create art for the rest of my life, but I want to take it to the next level. I want to help others see that they also have a passion of art instilled in them. All humankind has an innate notion to create. Every individual creates  differently. It's like a group of people that need to cross a small river.  Each person will step on different stones to cross the river, but all of them are able to get over the river.  I want to show people how to cross the river and make a path of art in their lives.
Melodie Henderson
Growing up, Melodie took every opportunity she could to perform, singing in vocal competitions, choirs, musicals, and church services.  Upon graduating from BYU (magna cum laude) with a degree in secondary music education, her musical endeavors have mostly included directing high school, junior high, and church choirs.  She loves conducting, and is currently working toward an M.M. in choral conducting at GMU.  Melodie is excited to participate with Artist, Interrupted, as it is giving her the chance to work on and perform solo material again.  Melodie lives in Arlington, VA, with her husband Mark.

Megan Ensign Young
Megan Young received her BA in Dance from Brigham Young University. While there she studied contemporary dance in China and performed throughout the United States on BYU's "The Dancers' Company". Orginially from Georgia, she trained in dance as well as competed USGA level 8 gymnastics. In high school she performed and trained in Hagen, Germany and was one of 16 in the state selected for the Georgia Governor's Honors Program for dance. She recently obtained her personal trainer certificate from American Council on Exercise. She is married to Aaron Young, and loves to dance and move with their daughter Annabelle.

Julia Jardine McMullin
Julia followed her mother's footsteps when she chose to study the violin. She enjoyed performing in various youth and regional orchestras as well as studying privately through high school. She continued to study violin privately in college but, because of academic pursuits she was unable to play in an orchestra. However, in order to survive demanding honors and graduate programs in Art History she would often escape to an empty practice room and pull out some old music. With the arrival of her first child in 2005 those practice-room retreats ended. Nevertheless she continues to love the violin and hopes to instill the love of music in her three children (and one on the way).

Holly Petty

Holly currently teaches Suzuki violin out of her home as well as plays in the Symphony Orchestra of Arlington. She earned a bachelors in Dance Education from Brigham Young University. While studying there she played in BYU's Symphony Orchestra as well as performed with The Dancers' Company, Kinnect and DanceEnsemble performing groups. Before she moved to Virginia last year she taught dance a Payson High School and BYU Children’s and Teens’ creative dance program. Holly fully acknowledges that without the loving support of her husband Brad and their daughter Lilia this concert would not be in existence.

Phyllis Shea

Phyllis Shea has been involved in music from her first piano lesson at the age of 5.  New Jersey born, she is a graduate of Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia where she studied biology, voice and piano.  She is a wife, mother of 4, and grandmother of 9.  Anna Nowalk, who duets with her tonight, is a member of Phyllis’s extended family.
Phyllis and husband, Jim, have lived in Arlington 50 years.  They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in August 2011.
“I have always loved to sing.  A vocal mishap at 17 destroyed all hopes of a career in singing.  In 2010, a surgical procedure improved my vocal mechanism and gave me renewed joy in singing.  I am an “Artist Interrupted” by 55 years.”
“I feel that advancing age should not be an impediment to one’s passion.  Presently I am learning to play the violin, taking lessons and participating in the new Symphony Orchestra of Arlington, where I’m proud to say I am the oldest member.”
“Thanks for allowing Anna and me to share our music with you.”

Anna Grace Nowalk

Anna’s only interruptions as an artist thus far have been soccer practice, homework,
bedtime, and the time constraints of her chauffeurs. The oldest of four, she is a 5th grader
in Arlington, where she sings with her school chorus and the Choralis Cantus Choirs.
Anna has performed with the Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia, and at Signature
Theatre, as “Young Cosette” in Les Miserables, as well as in Signature’s productions
of ShowBoat and Chess. She is honored to have the opportunity to sing beautiful music
with Phyllis, who is an amazing teacher, role model, and bonus grandmother.

Cady Jardine
Cady studied ballet at Nina Marlow's School of Ballet in Phoenix,
Arizona.  Cady was trained in the Russian ballet tradition, as her
teacher Nina Marlow was the great-niece of Michel Fokine, who is
celebrated as the father of contemporary ballet.  While in high
school, Cady taught ballet to young children at the Conservatory of
Dance in Phoenix, while cheerleading on Friday nights and earning the
title of Spiritleader of the year in 2000.  She also danced during her
undergraduate work at Brigham Young University.  Cady received her MA
in Archaeology from BYU in 2007.  She currently teaches ballet to
little girls at Mobu Kids and especially enjoys teaching Mommy and Me
ballet where children and parents get to move, create, and learn
together.  Cady and her husband have a son and a daughter and enjoy
impromptu dance parties together as a family.

 Joelle Lambert
Joelle grew up in a small town in Florida near Cape Canaveral. She
earned a bachelor's degree in Linguistics and a Master's degree in
Public Administration. In addition to playing the piano, she enjoys
hiking in the mountains and going on bike rides. She lives in
Arlington, VA with her husband and two children.

Breena Grimes
Breena's love of dance first became evident at a young age with her cheerful renditions of the "muppet dance".  Growing up in Clovis, CA she danced on many football fields and competition stages.  At Brigham Young University she discovered her passion for contemporary dance and teaching creative movement to children.  While at BYU she danced on several companies including the university's premier international contemporary dance company, Dancers' Company. She currently teaches dance at a preschool in Great Falls, VA.  On an average day Breena can be found crawling and jumping with her two sweet girls, making a run to Target and dancing in the kitchen with her husband.

Angela Higbee

A few months ago, Angela climbed up into the attic, dusted off the ol’ music books and rediscovered a long lost joy – SINGING! Not just shower singing or singing sweet lullabies at night, but studied, practiced, hard-core-diaphragm-supported-pipe-pumping!  Oh yes, and the drama! Her reignited excitement stems from lessons, classes, practices and performances dating back to her youngest days. Some of the highlights include Opera for Lovers and “Ida” in BYU’s Die Fledermaus by Strauss. Angela earned a BA in vocal performance (classical emphasis) from Brigham Young University in 2007 and officially assumes the title Artist, Interrupted. Angela’s vocal career is survived by her loving husband and three sons-the true joys in her life.

Stephanie Maughan
Stephanie Maughan danced professionally with Utah Regional Ballet where she performed both classical and contemporary choreography with a variety of notable choreographers. After retiring from ballet she attended the University of Utah, receiving a Bachelors' degree in Health Promotion and Education and went on to work with Salt Lake Valley Health Department. In 2009 Stephanie and her husband relocated to the DC area to pursue their graduate degrees. Stephanie is currently a ballet instructor at Ravel Dance Studio in Reston, VA and is pursuing a Masters' in Public Health at George Mason University.

Bren Larsen

Bren grew up taking piano and voice lessons, but somewhere along the way, decided to major in Art History.  After graduating from Brigham Young University, she moved to DC to earn a Master's degree in Museum Education.  In the area, she met her husband, Sterling (an artist!).  They love to cook, decorate, sing, and work on art projects together.  During the week Bren works as a museum educator at the Smithsonian Institution.  On the weekends she teaches preschool art appreciation classes with the company, Art Within Reach.  She misses music and is glad to be a part of this concert!

 Michelle Prince
Michelle Prince fell in love with dance as an art form in her hometown of St. George, Utah where she studied ballet and jazz. She has since explored all kinds of movement from contemporary to international folk dance at Brigham Young University where she majored in Dance Education. Dance continues to be an integral part of her life as a mother of two young children, as she dances her way through every-day chores like the laundry and dishes and occasionally teaches at a studio or two.
